Is the new iPad worth the upgrade?
The new iPad will be out March 16, to the chagrin of those of us holding on to our original iPads and iPad 2s.
The question on everyone’s lips is the worthiness of Apple’s newest baby. Should you sell your iPad for this one? Should you sell all your valuables to buy your first iPad, or is this post-pc thing just a farce?
The big changes in the new iPad (it’s not called the iPad 3) are a better camera and a very high-definition display, with resolution of over one million pixels more than 1080p (about 2 million pixels), all squished onto a 9.7 inch screen like the last two iPads. Apple is keeping the iPad 2 alive, selling it at a $100 discount. Full Story
OS review: Jolicloud
ReadWriteWeb has a report on Jolicloud, a cloud-based spinoff of Ubuntu with a user interface based on Chromium (the development version of the Google Chrome browser) and HTML5. This zippy little Linux OS is mainly meant for running on Intel-based netbooks and tablets, but today dropped an update that will make it usable on computers as much as ten years old. While this may not be directly related to e-books, anything that makes older hardware more usable means it could be more easily used for educational purposes by the needy—purposes such as reading e-books.
I’ve been playing with Jolicloud as a dual-boot option on my laptop for the last couple of weeks and have found it to be worthy for doing most of the things I need to do, save gaming. It comes with the Ibis Readerbuilt in and launchable from its desktop, and FBReader can of course be installed from the console as it can from any flavor of Linux.

Mac users are being warned to study search engine results carefully for the first significant fake antivirus "scareware" program to target the platform and its loyal following.
The threat has been named OSX/MacDefender.A by Mac security specialists Intego, which on its own offers a clue to its unusual nature. This is not simply a cross-platform threat looking to widen its net to catch a few extra victims but a specially written program Mac application that just happens to be bogus.
The scam is identical in form to the large numbers of scareware scams faced by Windows users day in, day out. A malware link encountered through a poisoned search -- currently including ones mentioning the death of Osama Bin Laden -- launches a Java-based scan script that claims to find malware on the user's system.
