Submarine Escape
Seventy years ago, off the Greek island of Kefalonia, the British submarine HMS Perseus hit an Italian mine, sparking one of the greatest and most controversial survival stories of World War II.
The clear waters of the Mediterranean were a death trap for British submarines in World War II.
Some were bombed from the air, others hunted with sonar and depth charges, and many, perhaps most, collided with mines.
Two fifths of the subs that ventured into the Mediterranean were sunk and when a submarine sank it became a communal coffin - everyone on board died. That was the rule.
In fact, during the whole of the war there were only four escapes from stricken British submarines. And the most remarkable of these took place on 6 December 1941, when HMS Perseus plummeted to the seabed. (Full Story)
Philander Smith names new president, Johnny Moore
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Philander Smith College has chosen an Arkansas native as its new president.
Johnny Moore, who is originally from Washington, Ark., was named Friday by trustees as new leader of the traditionally black campus in Little Rock.
Moore is also a 1989 graduate of Philander Smith. He will leave his post as executive vice president of student affairs at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.

Arkansas State trustees consider tuition increases
NEWPORT, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas State University Board of Trustees will meet Friday to consider tuition increases at its campuses in the state.
The system says the proposal includes a 3.5 percent tuition increase at the Arkansas State campus in Jonesboro. The plan also includes increases of $4 to $5 per credit hour at ASU's two-year schools in Beebe, Mountain Home and Newport.
System President Charles Welch calls the plan conservative, saying that it still allows for an affordable education for Arkansas students. Full Story

New Nanotechnology Center Opens May 2
Dignitaries including Gov. Mike Beebe, Sen. Mark Pryor, Rep. Tim Griffin, and UALR Chancellor Joel E. Anderson will be on hand at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, for the opening and dedication of UALR’s newest building – the Center for Integrative Nanotechnology Sciences.
