Wal-Mart sets out fresher-foods goals Retailer aims to boost incomes at small-medium farms slash pes

groceryWal-Mart Stores Inc. announced several new goals Thursday aimed at getting more fresh foods on its store shelves while at the same time reducing the environmental impact of growing those products.

The announcement came as Wal-Mart executives and employees met with suppliers and representatives of environmental groups at the company’s headquarters in Bentonville. About 700people attended the event, Wal-Mart spokesman Kory Lundberg said.

“Grocery is more than half of Wal-Mart’s business. Yet only four of our 39 public sustainability goals address food,” Mike Duke, president and chief executive officer, said in prepared remarks for ... Full Story

Book collects firsthand accounts from 20th century

We Were ThereThis book is a collection of stories from people who escaped the Titanic, fought in the trenches, spent hard time in prison camps, met the Beatles, saw the mushroom cloud and went to the moon.

The idea of grouping a bunch of eyewitness historical accounts into a book is not new, but "We Were There: An Eyewitness History of the Twentieth Century" is still a fun read. This selection, edited by Robert Fox, covers mostly the 20th century, from the time of the Wright brothers' flight to the recent mass protests in Iran. Pages in between include accounts of two world wars, communist uprisings, sieges and head-spinning cultural changes. Full Story

Arkansas in for More Severe Weather

A day after a series of powerful storms in Arkansas killed 10 people in flooding and a tornado that twisted a tractor-trailer like a wrung dish rag, residents in several states braced Tuesday for a second straight night of violent weather as forecasters again called for twisters to hammer the region.

The National Weather Service issued a high risk warning for severe weather in a stretch extending from northeast of Memphis to just northeast of Dallas and covering a large swath of Arkansas. It last issued such a warning on April 16, when dozens of tornadoes hit North Carolina and killed 21 people.  Full Story

Staggering Picasso trove turns up in France

The electrician, who once worked for Picasso, and his wife for years squirreled away the staggering trove — which is believed to be authentic — inside a trunk in the garage of their home on the French Riviera.

The cache, dating from the artist’s most creative period from 1900 to 1932, includes lithographs, portraits, watercolors, and sketches — plus nine Cubist collages said to be worth 40 million euros alone, according to French daily Liberation, which first reported Monday on the discovery. Full Story.
